Wiseman Clothing is offering a Student Work Placement Pattern Cutting opportunity.  This Work Placement is aimed at a student who is focusing on pattern making and wants to advance their skills within the industry.  The placement is perfect for somebody who wants to see how a sample and production studio operates.

The candidate should have knowledge of manual pattern making, be highly organised, work to tight deadlines, have knowledge of garment construction. This placement is suitable for somebody who has to take a placement as part of your degree, as this will set you apart from your counterparts with your knew gained knowledge of the industry.

Whilst undertaking the placement you will be doing:

Pattern making, making blocks, learning how to manually grade and understanding of different grade rules, choosing appropriate fabric and finishing’s for the design, tracing patterns, helping out with general tasks around the studio and working with the rest of the team to ensure your pattern is executed correctly.

General tasks:

  • Creating first patterns
  • Helping make blocks
  • Copying patterns
  • Make amendments to patterns 
  • Toiling the patterns you've made

Skills required:

  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Work well alone and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of the Fashion industry
  • Sewing (not essential but knowledge of industrial machines is a plus)
  • General garment construction
  • Understanding patterns is essential though we will assist you if you have any questions.

What you will learn at Wiseman Clothing:

  • How to cut fabric correctly in all types of fabrics and if they require fusing
  • How to manipulate patterns and amend them once toiled
  • How to grade manually and how grade rules differ from children’s wear to womenswear
  • How to organise your work load so you will get the most out of your time
  • How identify the correct fabrics for the style you are making
  • Learning how the studios operates and how the process of first pattern making, toiling, sampling and CMT works
