What is the role?

  • Placement Students in the ghd Science & Innovation Team contribute to a creative approach to problem solving, working at the forefront of breakthrough research in the Hair and Beauty industry.  
  • This role offers the opportunities to work with expert hair stylists, consumer insights experts & measurement scientists and to participate in cross-functional innovation project teams and to contribute to the new technology development strategy of the company.  
  • The position provides an exciting opportunity to pioneer the development of early-stage prototypes alongside an industry leading team of engineers and scientists. 

 
 Responsibilities:

  • Support early-stage development of new product technologies.  
  • Support the creation of intellectual property and patented technology. 
  • Contribute to the development of ideas for the innovation pipeline in relevant & compelling ways (Innovation, science, collaborating with consumer research) 
  • Develop Mechanical Engineering design, build, testing, data collection and optimising of proof of principle science and technology test systems skills (full training will be given) using core laboratory-based testing methods for product performance and style creation. 
  • Develop an understanding of the role of Research and Development within an industrial innovation setting. 
  • Own and complete an individually tailored Technology development project to demonstrate skills required by degree programme (usually in 2nd half of placement year). 
  • Produce hair measurement data to guide product development within innovation projects.  
  • Work with cross-functional teams to understand the project relevance of hair science measurements and contribute to the level of scientific insight within the team. 
  • Provide product claims support for the continuous improvement of current ghd products as part of product lifecycle management. 
  • Support hair science team collaborations with the ghd Marketing Team, using hair science understanding to build product value proposition. 

 
  
New Product Development Process:

  • Create ideas for new technology and Hair tools using a passion for research, development and an analytical (data driven) approach to problem solving.   
  • Work with cross-functional teams to support the creation of new technology, through the design, build, testing, data collection and optimising of proof of principle science and technology test systems. 
  • Provide Engineer and testing support for the development and improvement of current and future ghd products as part of product lifecycle management. 

 
 
Who is Best Suited;
 
Requirements:

  • Engineering, Industrial Product Design or similar undergraduate looking for an exciting and consumer-relevant placement in a commercial Engineering environment.
  • Resourceful, creative problem-solving skills and the ability to network effectively and seek out resources successfully.  
  • Able to work in a friendly & fast-paced environment and grow to become an independent, autonomous member of a supportively challenging team. 
  • Most importantly of all, a willingness to learn, work hard, be flexible and apply your own creativity.

 
Desirable:

  • Experience designing, building, and testing prototypes  
  • Experience working in lab environment  
  • Statistical data analysis 
  • Understanding of physics, thermodynamics, materials science, sensing and control. 
  • Experience with the following software packages would be advantageous: 
  • Matlab or Python 
  • Ansys, or similar simulation packages 
  • CAD skills (ideally SolidWorks and/or Creo
