About: Catherine Teatum and Rob Jones are the designers of London based womenswear brand Teatum Jones; a label which has become recognised for its modern, polished and bold aesthetic. They are the current winners of the International Woolmark Prize.

Driven by a love of human stories the designers create bold, exquisite, quality fabrics that are layered with narrative. These luxurious textiles inform the development of modern and refined shapes. Teatum Jones’ aesthetic speaks to a super smart, confident and creative woman. Having trained in womenswear at Ravensbourne and Central Saint Martin’s respectively they were united through their love of human narrative. Such an approach to design has earned the duo accolades, reviews and output referring to them as London's young ‘textile pioneers’ and ‘innovators’.

We are offering a Womenswear Design & Studio Work Placement to Student candidates undertaking an industry placement module.  This opportunity is available from September 2019 onwards.

What you will be doing:

  • Basic pattern work
  • Cutting out toiles
  • Sewing together toiles
  • Cutting out final samples
  • Picking up / sourcing fabric/trims from suppliers
  • Picking up and dropping off to manufacturers
  • Sitting in design meetings with stylists and design fittings
  • Using computer programmes; Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe * Photoshop/and or Illustrator
  • LFW Catwalk, presentation, event, backstage preparation
  • Sales and Press responsibilities
  • QC of production and LFW Samples
  • General tasks involved with the efficient running of the studio

  • Competent at basic sewing machine skills.
  • Have an understanding of basic pattern cutting
  • Confident at cutting out fabric
  • Confident at carrying out research from a given brief.
  • Confident at getting around London.

Ideal candidates interests:

  • An interest in learning ALL sides of a fashion business; design, cut, fit, fabrication, print, styling, manufacturing, sales/buying appointment, press, marketing, budgets, production etc
  • An interest in working with a very small creative team
  • An interest in meeting/working with key industry figures (press/stylists etc)
  • An interest in creative pattern cutting
  • An interest in exhibitions and cultures of arts

What you will learn / we will teach you:

  • How to efficiently work within a small inspiring team.
  • Be innovative, self motivated and proactive
  • You will have insights of how a small developing fashion company operates.
  • The proceedures of how a collection is developed through from concept, design, realisation to production, catwalk shows and sales. 
  • The importance of  how marketing, production, PR and sales is to a small developing company.
  • You may learn/ develop your skills further in pattern cutting, garment construction and computing illustration.
  • How to professionally communicate and represent yourself/ and the brand in front of clients and business supporters.
