As an Assistant Buyer, you will offer full support to the Buyer in developing a product offer that meets our customer requirements and maximises sales and profit opportunities. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the critical path is achieved and that order management and sampling processes run to schedule, you will manage and develop a BAA.  This role is ideally suited to someone with experience at Assistant Buyer level within a High Street fashion retailer.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Buyer and contribute to decisions on the product range.
  • Negotiate and liaise with suppliers, under Buyers direction, to maximise sales and profit.
  • When required, present product to Senior Management and follow up on any action points for team / department
  • Management, coaching and development of a Buyers Admin Assistant, delegating responsibility to develop their skills, and providing a wider more strategic understanding of the business, the customer and the department.
  • Monitor the market, identifying competitor activity and its potential impact on departmental strategy, and prepare comparative shopping and written trend reports.
  • Ownership of the critical path with regular meetings with BA and Assistant Garment Tech, and ensuring Buyer is updated with any issues in team weekly meetings.
  • Liaise with Merchandise Assistant and Garment Tech Assistant regarding deliveries, critical path and quality issues.
  • Work closely with Assistant Merchandiser to review department performance and develop areas for improvement
  • Build effective working relationships both internally (Design, Garment Tech, Retail) and externally (Suppliers).
  • Maintain line list and Buy Sheets, ensuring accuracy at all times
  • Ensure product Sales Sheets are set up each season and updated frequently.
  • Ensure correct information is created in an accurate and timely way on the Product Information System (PIM)
  • Efficiently run department and pro-actively look for ways to improve systems and processes when necessary.  
  • Approve lab dips, trims and bulk production with Buyer.
  • Attend fit sessions and update Buyer, if absent
  • Organise and prepare for range building/ product selection meetings.
  • Attend budget and range planning meeting.
  • Assist buying team in preparing and sending technical packs to suppliers in advance of buying trips.
  • Resolving buying related queries with BAA
  • Carry out SWOT with Buyer and Merchandising.
  • Present Monday trade in Buyers absence
  • Brief copy writer on all product in range
  • Copy check book and website
  • Complete ownership of the photo shoot process with assistance from the BAA.
  • Sample and new development management ensuring workbooks are updated.
  • Ade-hoc duties as required.

Skills and Experience:

  • Creative flair, with a strong fashion eye and an understanding of fashion trends and knowledge of the High Street. 
  • Knowledge of product and manufacturing techniques
  • Understanding of fabric testing as well as fitting and sealing.
  • Strong commercial awareness and excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication, administrative and organisational skills
  • Good negotiating skills and the ability to network and influence people.
  • Team player with great interpersonal skills
  • Good numerical skills and computer literate in excel/ word.
  • Good problem solver and the ability to multitask
  • Proactive attitude with the ability to prioritise under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Confidence, drive and determination with the ability to voice an opinion.
  • Excellent time management and confident presentation style. 
  • Flexible, positive and enthusiastic
  • Train and mentor BAAs on the team with the ability to communicate and motivate.
