Orwell + Austin is an e-commerce fashion brand focusing on direct to consumer sales (with some wholesale business, but the role would be in relation to the direct to consumer side of the business.  The brand creates playful, colourful and contemporary knitwear which is sustainably and ethically sourced.  The brand has been running for 9 years and is growing year on year.  The brand works with some remote freelance workers on areas like PR and content creation, but otherwise is solely run by the brand founder who undertakes all work in relation to running a brand (from design, to customer service, website maintenance, marketing, social media, and production).

The purpose of the Ecommerce Assistant is to assist the brand Founder directly in the day-to-day running of the brand, principally focusing on three key tenants of the business – marketing assistance, website assistance, order fulfilment.

Specific duties in relation to these three areas are set out below:


  • Short form copy writing based around the brand core values of sustainability to be used for things like social media posts, and Facebook marketing ads
  • Newsletter planning (all supervised by the Founder) and producing first draft newsletters materials (working within the newsletter platform Omnisend which the Founder will provide full training on).
  • Social media marketing – scheduling posts, coming up with ideas for posts, coming up with ideas for video post content. Working with apps such as Later, Canvas, Oneshot (which the Founder will provide full training on),
  • Facebook marketing assistance. Coming up with new brand ad target audiences and short form ad copy. Facebook ads training will be provided.


  • Ensuring the website is SEO compliant (with full supervision and instruction from the Founder)
  • Uploading new product images and descriptions
  • Uploading blog content and imagery

Order Fulfilment

  • Stock take
  • Order packing

Skills and experience required:

  • Good written English
  • good understanding of Microsoft office programmes
  • A level or equivalent level qualifications

Nice to have:

  • Experience working with e-commerce platforms such as Shopify would be ideal

Certain tasks will present the opportunity to hone a specific area of expertise such as creating the written content for the newsletters and planning the layout and look of a newsletter, learning how to set up newsletter automation, and learning how to take forward a visual brand strategy through content creation within brand parameters.

During the the role the following will be monitored:

With the support of Austin + Orwell's gateway monthly sessions will be carried out to discuss the following:

  • Overall performance

Progress sessions will also be carried out as a way to ensure participants are cared for by monitoring their wellbeing and overall enjoyment of the placement.  This will be an opportunity for participants to discuss what they like about the role and what they feel could be improved, as well as setting goals and objectives for the remainder of the placement. By the end of the placement the participant should have a better understanding of E-commerce marketing and operations in relation to a sustainable and ethically run fashion brand.


This role is part of the Government’s Kickstart scheme.  As a result, it is only available to 16-24 year olds on Universal Credit.  Please check you’re eligible with the Job Centre before you apply.
