Role Summary  of the Sample Machinist

Collaborating closely with Pattern Cutters, Senior Sample Machinists, and the wider product team, the Sample Machinist will play an essential role in bringing designs to life, creating accurate prototypes and development samples that serve as a reference for factories and align with the intended fit, construction, and performance requirements. This role requires technical skill in garment construction, adaptability across multiple machines, and problem-solving abilities to ensure the highest standard of sample execution.

Beyond sample production, you will help educate cross-functional teams on garment assembly, materials, and construction techniques, ensuring a clear understanding of how garments are made and why specific methods are used.

Key Responsibilities of the Sample Machinist

  • Produce high-quality prototype and development samples that accurately represent design intent and technical specifications.
  • Assemble garments using a wide range of machines, including flatlock, coverstitch, seam sealing, flatbed, and overlockers, ensuring samples mirror production-level techniques.
  • Construct performance-driven cycling and lifestyle apparel, working with a variety of technical woven and stretch fabrics.
  • Collaborate with Pattern Cutters to execute precise builds, providing feedback on stitch movement, fabric behaviour, and construction durability.
  • Action fit insights and assists in reconstructing samples to reflect pattern modifications or functionality improvements.
  • Ensure all samples intended for the factory provide an accurate and reliable reference for stitching, panel assembly, and finishing techniques.
  • Support the product team by assisting in hands-on workshops and training sessions to foster a stronger understanding of garment construction.
  • Manage production timelines efficiently to ensure samples are completed within development deadlines.

What Rapha is looking for:

  • Proven experience in garment construction, with high proficiency in handling both woven and technical stretch fabric variations.
  • Versatile machine skills, with the ability to operate and adapt a range of industrial equipment, including flatlock, seam sealing, and heat-press machines.
  • Ability to interpret patterns and technical drawings accurately, translating them into high-precision samples or mock-ups.
  • A minimum of basic pattern-cutting knowledge, with the ability to make patterns when required.
  • Strong collaborative mindset and the ability to proactively suggest solutions for design and pattern challenges.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to work effectively within a fast-paced atelier environment.
